If you had to go, not a bad way at all - Andrew

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/09/26/clifton-maloney-dead-cong_n_300933.html

NEW YORK (AP) The husband of U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney has died on a mountain climbing expedition in the Himalayas, aides to the congresswoman said Saturday.
Clifton Maloney, a millionaire investment banker and avid climber, was resting in a high-altitude camp after a successful ascent to the summit of the world's sixth-highest mountain when he died.
He was 71, a late age for such a grueling endeavor, but had been in excellent health, aides said.
"I am told that his last words were, 'I am the happiest man in the world. I just climbed a beautiful mountain,'" said Barry Nolan, a congressional aide who works with Carolyn Maloney.
Rep. Maloney, a Democrat, was "very shaken" by the death, he said.
Arrangements were still being made Saturday to recover the body from the slopes of Cho Oyu, a 26,906-foot peak that straddles the border of Nepal and Tibet.
Maloney reached the summit with a professional climbing partner and guide, Marty Schmidt, on Friday, or Thursday night Eastern Daylight Time. They rested overnight at a camp at about 23,000 feet.
Maloney died unexpectedly the next day after going to sleep in his tent, Nolan said. The cause of death was unclear, he said.

Nolan wasn't sure whether Maloney was on the Nepalese or Tibetan side of the mountain.
Maloney was a former vice president of Goldman Sachs who made millions of dollars in investment banking and real estate after establishing his own financial firm, C.H.W. Maloney & Co. He was a director of several companies, including The Wall Street Fund Inc. and Interpool Limited.
A Navy veteran and graduate of Princeton College and Harvard Business School, Maloney also was a seasoned athlete and adventurer. A publicist for the family released a biographical statement saying Maloney had completed the New York City Marathon 20 times and was the oldest man to reach the summit of Cho Oyu.
The family was informed of his death by the Department of State early Saturday.
Carolyn and Clifton Maloney married in 1976. He is survived by his two daughters, his mother, his sister and nine nieces and nephews.

thoughts on Michael Crichton - Andrew

It is not wise or kind to disparage the dead though her goes- Michael Crichton is an idiot and the fact that his books have so wide ranging appeal infuriates me. His stance on Global Warming http://www.michaelcrichton.net/speech-environmentalismaseligion.html and the stupid and factually inaccurate book State of Fear he put out to prove it were the last straw for me. His books should be burned in my opinion though that would contribute to global warming so let us just bury them in a deep pit where they can do no further harm.

  what up - Andrew

someone needed to write something so here goes- I had an excellent weekend mountain biking a maintenance road through Sterling Forest under the high tension wires though some of the hills gave me pause and I either walked the bike up or down those stretches. My hair is still standing on end like in David Lynch's Eraserhead http://davidlynch.de/head.html and I feel mechanically disaffected too! though seriously, Earlier, I stayed at a shelter on the AT overnight, met some through hikers and heard owls call all night over the shelter. my psyche is grounded for a little while.

  XGames banter... - CJN

No worries John. I watch too many XGames slopestyle snowboarding comps and have turned my attention to hanging out in the terrain park and halfpipe this season (read: midlife crisis). Luckily for me a few inches of powder are a lot more forgiving than the concrete of the skatepark.

Good, reeeeeel good. - John Ferguson

Nice to see the posts lads. CN, I have no idea what ur talking about but feel fairly certain we'd take the same lift but not the same line down the mountain-sounds cool to watch though.
AJ-thanks for the disc info, and good memory on Erins birthday. In fact I may have to miss Shaft Cheese reunion as it may be held on that exact day but I'm not to worried as I'm sure that after Kieran good will last time and everybody showing, this next one wont be that last for sure! Keep em coming boys!

Scale Back big and brash becomes let's keep the kids home and save cash - Andrew

Searching for that equilbrium about now.Work/Home/Family and brief respites of recreation though these are usually less ambitious then in year past. Every Sunday I play Ulitmate Frisbee when I can with a local group. It is really phenomenal. Fergs there is a group out in East Hampton and actually they have a tourney set up for May 16 http://www.easthamptonultimate.com/ though I recall you saying that was Erin's Bday so may or may not be a possibility. They play pickups games too and walk ons are permitted. Something you rarely see in other sports. Try walking on to a softball game - ain't happening charley.

Like candy for the iPod...and the soul. - CJN

Loaded up Led Zep Mothership remastered on the pod and turned it up to 11. Amazed I didn't get a speeding ticket on the way into work.

Happy 39th John. I started the 365 day clock to the big '40' on January 2 on the slopes at Steamboat. Proving to my seven year old that daddy can still huck a method air in the bumps and spread the butterbox. Knees were a bit shot after that...but 1 or 2 vicadin cocktails and I'm feeling 25 again.

  Robert Hunter - John Ferguson

If Jerry didn't play so well, i'm sure i would hate his vocals, but with that playing - his voice accompanies perfectly. faced with mysteries dark and vast - statements just seem vain at last. hunter must have been so plesaed to hear this played and sung so perfectly. Hunter enjoys a solid canon.

More Westerberg and note on MMJ - John Ferguson

"Sanitation expert and a maintenance engineer,
garbage man a janitor and you my dear" from waitress in the sky

My morning jacket played the garden new years. A four hour show which included "Bring it on Home" cover of Sam Cooke who performed it at the Harlem Square club in 1963 (not sure exact date). Almost 50 years later that rythym and blues feeling transcends decades easily and Jim James et al are worthy transporters of the feel. Only saw it on youtube, must obviously have been better in person.

HERE COMES A REGULAR - John Ferguson

I USED TO LIVE AT HOME
BUT NOW I STAY AT THE HOUSE

Westerberg hid this simple painful lyric from me in one of my favorite songs. All along i thought he was referring to some less than upstanding "house" where less than reputable characters hung because some jagoff told me that's what it meant. He also writes elsewhere that"its got bums when its cold like any other place". Real good.
